Restart Word numbering

  • When numbering items in a list in Microsoft Word 97, how do I restart the numbering again from 1 for different levels or subsets embedded in the original list, how do I return to the previous level and continue the
numbering from where I left off ,and when I have finished my numbered list, how do I turn off the numbering when it annoyingly persists some lines later, apart from clicking on the numbered list icon?

To start the numbering again from any level, right-click on the number that you want to start again from one, click on ‘bullets and numbering’, and at the bottom of the dialogue box that appears it will say ‘restart numbering’. Click the circle next to that so that it gets coloured in with black (these are called ‘radio buttons’) and then the ‘Ok’ button. The numbered point will then be ‘1′ again but may not be indented. If that is the case then just indent it to the desired point by pressing the ‘tab’ key. To return to previous levels press ’shift’ & ‘tab’ together and this will reverse the ‘tab’ key therefore making it go backwards rather than forwards. To turn off the numbering just press the ‘backspace’ key on the line that you want to stop the numbering on.

Hi there. If this is the first time you are posting a comment it will not appear immediately, but needs to be approved. This is necessary in order to combat comment spam. However, once you have submitted a comment (which is subsequently approved) you do not need to go through this process again - the site remembers who you are and auto-approves your comments. Nifty eh? Anyway, sorry about the inconvenience that this may cause for your first comment post.
