Running out of memory

  • I seem to be running out of memory too easily. I have a multimedia Pentium 133 with 32 meg RAM and Windows95. The specific example is when I have had to reboot or shut down the computer without using the Windows95 sequence. When restarting the computer wants to run Scandisk but runs out of memory half way through this procedure. After starting the system I can run Scandisk manually without any problem. Why won’t it work during the boot-up?

When your computer boots up it loads specific drivers and programs that are specified in files called ‘Autoexec.bat’ and ‘Config.sys’. When these load they stay resident (loaded) in the memory until you shutdown or restart your computer. Too many things loading could result in a radical loss of memory. To see if this is the case, reboot the computer and when the message that says ‘Windows 95 Starting’¦’ appears (only for about 2 seconds when booting up) press the ‘F8′ button. A menu should come up giving you choices on how to boot up Windows. Select the ‘Safe Mode’ option and press enter. Safe mode bypasses all startup files and will not load any unnecessary drivers/programs. See if you can run some memory intensive programs and if you can, then it is the problem of too many drivers/programs remaining resident. Reboot the computer and it should load up as normal. Open Start menu > run. Type in ‘Sysedit’ and then press ‘Ok’. Look at the ‘Autoexec.bat’ window and review to make sure that no unnecessary things are loading. Get someone else to review it as well and DO NOT edit it until it has been checked because it could dramatically effect how your computer acts.

Hi there. If this is the first time you are posting a comment it will not appear immediately, but needs to be approved. This is necessary in order to combat comment spam. However, once you have submitted a comment (which is subsequently approved) you do not need to go through this process again - the site remembers who you are and auto-approves your comments. Nifty eh? Anyway, sorry about the inconvenience that this may cause for your first comment post.
