Windows Update not working
-
I have tried several times to access the Windows 98 Update feature that comes with Win 98. Each time I do, I get a blank page with the message “Done” in the bottom left hand corner. It does not matter where I access the URL (windowsupdate.microsoft.com/default.htm) from even from Microsoft’s home page - I still get the blank page. Even an email from Microsoft regarding the Y2K problem that contained the URL still gave me the blank page. Are you able to help me solve this mystery (and get the updates).
From the information you have provided me I assume that you are using Netscape rather than Internet Explorer. You can only access Microsoft Windows Update through Internet Explorer because when you visit Windows Update it compiles an inventory of your computer to assess what updates you need, saving you time searching through them all. Internet Explorer is the only browser capable of performing this operation because it was specifically designed to do this, whereas Netscape can’t because it is third-party software. To access Windows Update through Internet Explorer just click the ‘Windows Update’ icon on the start-menu. If you are still experiencing trouble, even if you are using Internet Explorer, go into ‘View’ menu > ‘Internet Options’ and click on the ‘Security’ tab. Select ‘Internet Zone’ (if not already selected) in the ‘Zone’ drop down box and make sure that the ‘Medium (More Secure)’ option is selected. If it was previously on ‘High (Most Secure)’ Internet Explorer may not let Windows update run an inventory on your computer. With Medium Security you will be given the options to allow or refuse these things rather than the internet site automatically doing the selection for you.
