Mouse functions not working

  • Two function of my mouse is not working. (i) I cannot use it to drag and drop icons within and between folders. I can right click, double click (ii) When I click to select URL on my mail (Outlook Express), it doesn’t take me anywhere. I cannot right click to cut/copy either. I’m running Windows 98. I have re-installed the mouse driver from disk, but no difference. The mouse works perfectly fine on another machine! The shop that I bought it from suggested re-installing Windows 98! I’d prefer to leave that as the last option. Hope you can help.

Since the mouse can do an operation in one application (ie. Can right click in explorer) but can’t in another (ie. Can’t right click in Outlook Express) we can safely assume that it isn’t a hardware problem. The first thing to do would be to make sure that the mouse is fully plugged into the port at the back of the computer. If that checks out all right, then open a DOS application that requires a mouse to run (if you have one) and see if the mouse responds correctly. If it does then more than likely Windows is causing the problem. Go into Start menu > Settings > Control Panel > Mouse. Make sure that the mouse is set to right-handed (or left-handed depending on what hand you use to write) and that the double-click speed is comfortable. If these solutions do not work then it may be a problem with the serial card inside your computer. This may be possible since you have already connected your mouse to another computer. The serial card drives the serial port to which the mouse is connected to. Take your computer to a computer repairer to have this problem checked out.

Hi there. If this is the first time you are posting a comment it will not appear immediately, but needs to be approved. This is necessary in order to combat comment spam.
