Logical Block Addressing

  • My computer hangs after 10-15 min of use. I can’t even use Ctrl-Alt-Del to restart. I have to use the reset button. I’ve used this Pentium 133 for 2 years with no problems and upgraded happily to Windows 98 two months ago. In the resetting, Scandisk reported “Scandisk cannot read from the last cluster on Drive D. This cluster is either damaged, or your system is not configured properly. Drive D may need to have Logical Block Addressing (LBA) enabled to work properly, or its disk partition may be incorrectly marked as a non-LBA partition. Data loss can occur if your LBA setting or disk partition type for this drive is mis-configured. Check your computer’s BIOS setup utility, or contact your computer manufacturer or have your computer checked by a qualified computer hardware technician. If you’re sure your drive is configured correctly, click continue to have scandisk check drive D for errors. Then Continue. If your computer LBA setting is configured improperly and Scandisk continues, scandisk may report and repair errors incorrectly. This could result in severe damage to your data or incorrectly mark section of your drive as bad. Are you sure your system is configured correctly?” When I clicked “continue” “Scandisk encountered a data error while reading cluster 131688. Scandisk will try to continue past this error. When scandisk offers to perform a surface scan on this drive, choose Yes.” My computer retailer said it could be a motherboard or memory problem! Any ideas or solutions?

LBA stands for Logical Block Addressing and it is a method by which the computer accesses hard disk drives. This is useful because it allows IDE hard drives larger than 504mb to be fully partitioned. The problem that you are having is probably caused by the LBA being mis-configured. This can be fixed by going into the BIOS setup of your computer. I suggest you ask a computer technician or a experienced computer user to fix this for you because making a small error when doing this, or pressing a wrong key could reconfigure your computer. It is very unlikely that it is a hardware problem with your motherboard, memory or hard drive(s). If this does not solve your problem then I suggest you take your computer into an expert computer technician due to the moderately advanced nature of your computer problem.
