Visual C++ problems

  • I have VC++ 5.0 and VC++ 6.0 installed on my computer. I re-installed Windows 95 as the system was sluggish and unstable and this required me to re-install both items of software. Once done however, both caused problems: VC++ 5.0 said when installing that a required *.dll file, IVAUTO.dll was not loaded correctly and when running the program I get that the file ‘deviv.pkg’ was not able to be loaded, and a message to re-install the program. However, both these two files are on the system and installed. VC++ 6.0 requires DCOM and IE4 to work. Whilst DCOM is installed properly, when trying to install IE4 off the CD, it gives the error that the proxy server was down, I should try connecting again later. It need not install files from the internet however, as all those required are on the CD. What should I do?

    Regarding your first problem I suggest that you do re-install the program as the message says. During the installation of Visual C++ 5.0 there could have been a problem causing the files IVAUTO.dll and DEVIV.PKG to be corrupted. If this does not work then there may be a problem with having two versions of Visual C++ (versions 5 & 6) on the same computer. The conflict could occur because Visual C++ 5.0 requires those two files but when you installed Visual C++ 6.0 the two files were over written with new versions. When Visual C++ 5.0 tries to load, it is trying to load the version of these files that are designed for Visual C++ 6.0, but because Visual C++ 5.0 isn’t compatible with those files (being an earlier version) it can’t load them. I suggest that you uninstall both of the versions of Visual C++ and choose one to install and if you want to install both then you will have to install them each on separate computers. Turning now to the problem with installing Internet Explorer 4. This may be because you are trying to install it using the Active Setup (which is used to install IE4 directly off the internet). You do not need this because your files are on the CD. Go into Start menu > Programs, and open Windows Explorer. Insert the CD in the drive and go to the CD drive in the explorer. Go into the directory where the IE4 source files are located and execute the setup program in that directory. This should install the files off the CD rather than the internet.

Hi there. If this is the first time you are posting a comment it will not appear immediately, but needs to be approved. This is necessary in order to combat comment spam. However, once you have submitted a comment (which is subsequently approved) you do not need to go through this process again - the site remembers who you are and auto-approves your comments. Nifty eh? Anyway, sorry about the inconvenience that this may cause for your first comment post.
