Windows password prompt

  • How do I get rid of the “Welcome to Windows: User and Password” box? It disappears after I click cancel, but even going to Users in Control Panel it still hangs around

This question is frequently asked. One way to bypass the box is to make the computer login automatically for you. You can do this by downloading a control panel called TweakUI. This is a really useful program and can change many properties of Windows that you otherwise couldn’t change, or are usually very difficult to change. You can download this from the Microsoft website (www.microsoft.com). Once you have downloaded and installed it go to ‘Start menu’ > ‘Settings’ > ‘Control Panel’, open the ‘TweakUI’ control panel and click the ‘Network’ tab. Place a tick in the white box next to ‘Log on automatically at system startup’ (by clicking the white box) and fill in the ‘User name’ text box with whatever you want (eg. donh) but do not fill in the ‘Password’ box, this is not required. Click the ‘Ok’ button and restart Windows. You should not get the box at startup asking you for your username and password anymore because Windows automatically logs in for you.

Hi there. If this is the first time you are posting a comment it will not appear immediately, but needs to be approved. This is necessary in order to combat comment spam. However, once you have submitted a comment (which is subsequently approved) you do not need to go through this process again - the site remembers who you are and auto-approves your comments. Nifty eh? Anyway, sorry about the inconvenience that this may cause for your first comment post.
