Changing connections

  • I recently swapped ISP’s from the MSN to the PC Users Group TIP. My friend originally set up the internet for me on my computer but now he has left the PCUG and I don’t know how to set up the computer to access the internet for my new ISP (TIP). I uninstalled the MSN and I used the Internet Connection Wizard supplied with Windows 98 but it wants to log onto the MSN not my new ISP and I don’t know how to change the number and set up the proxy servers for TIP. Could you please help me?

I suggest that you do not use the Internet Connection Wizard that came with Windows 98 to set up your internet connection. Instead go to ‘Start menu’ > ‘Programs’ > ‘Accessories’ > ‘Communications’ > ‘Dial-up Networking’. Delete any current dial-up networking connections present then double-click the ‘Make new connection’ icon. Follow the wizard that will guide you through the setup process. Once this has been completed, you should have the dial-up connection to connect to the TIP servers. Concerning setting up the proxy servers for TIP I am not familiar with their addresses and set up procedure (all ISP’s are different). There are many complex settings and procedures when connecting to different ISP’s (eg. Network adapters). Therefore, I suggest you contact the PCUG and ask them to send you setup information for The Internet Project (TIP).

Hi there. If this is the first time you are posting a comment it will not appear immediately, but needs to be approved. This is necessary in order to combat comment spam. However, once you have submitted a comment (which is subsequently approved) you do not need to go through this process again - the site remembers who you are and auto-approves your comments. Nifty eh? Anyway, sorry about the inconvenience that this may cause for your first comment post.
