I am having tremendous frustration staying connected to the net. On two out of three (approx.) attempts, I connect but am dropped off after 2 minutes. I get the following error messages: ‘The TCP/IP Connection was unexpectedly terminated by the server, Account Personal mail POP3 Server pop1.myisp.com.au Error Number 0X800ccc 0f Server could not be found, or Account Personal Mail. POP3 Server pop1.myisp.com.au Error Number 0×800ccc0d’ I have contacted my ISP many times, and they have made suggestions, none of which have made any difference. It seems to me that if I can stay connected one time in every three, that my hardware, software and settings can’t be wrong. Could it be my ISP’s problem? At 25c per local call, this is getting expensive. I have cancelled call waiting, of course. Please help, it’s driving me nuts, not to mention broke! (more…)

  • Folder opening on startup

I recently installed ‘Uninstaller’. Included with that program was an ancillary program called ‘Oil Change’. My (very minor) problem is that when I turn the PC on it starts up in the normal manner but always opens a separate folder (part of Oil Change) which contains a file called ‘cyberkrn.vxd’. How do I stop this folder automatically opening at startup. I have tried all the usual options, start-up menu, system.ini (or whatever) but to no avail. I suspect it may be a registry problem but Windows 98 warns me to be careful changing registry settings. Even so, I am uncertain as to firstly what I should be changing and secondly what I should be changing it to! (more…)

  • Cannot open pictures

I’ve tried everything I can think of and now I’m stuck. My problem is that while my mother (in Scotland) can open picture files I send her, I cannot open the picture files she sends me. Every program I try to open them gives me the message “file type unknown” or similar. My mother tells me she has sent files as JPEG, TIFF etc, and although I have programs which work with these and many other formats (eg PaintShop Pro, and ACDSee as per your recent recommendation), no luck. I think the root of the problem may be in that while I have a PC clone, she drives a Mac - but she has sent files supposedly specially formatted for Windows, and they still don’t open..I do hope you can help. I am running Outlook Express on Windows 95 (my PC is too old to run Windows 98). I have profiles set up for different users of my machine. The problem is that all the profiles share the same Outlook Inbox. Is there a way to set up different inboxes for each profile? (more…)
