Folder opening on startup

  • I recently installed ‘Uninstaller’. Included with that program was an ancillary program called ‘Oil Change’. My (very minor) problem is that when I turn the PC on it starts up in the normal manner but always opens a separate folder (part of Oil Change) which contains a file called ‘cyberkrn.vxd’. How do I stop this folder automatically opening at startup. I have tried all the usual options, start-up menu, system.ini (or whatever) but to no avail. I suspect it may be a registry problem but Windows 98 warns me to be careful changing registry settings. Even so, I am uncertain as to firstly what I should be changing and secondly what I should be changing it to!

You should be able to stop this box from coming up by going to Start menu > Run > type in ‘msconfig’ (without the quotes) followed by pressing the ‘Ok’ button. The box that will appear is the System Configuration Utility. This is a very handy tool which can help you diagnose problems with Windows. Once this box has appeared, click the ‘Startup’ tab and from here you can choose what programs you want to load at startup. Although your problem isn’t with a program loading at startup but rather with a folder, this method should still apply. Scroll down the list of applications and when you find the program/folder that is opening at startup, you can stop this from loading by deselecting the check-box next to that item. If you cannot find the folder that is loading during startup in this list, it may be that when Oil Change starts up at startup it opens the folder itself. If this is the case, in the list of applications that open at startup, deselect the ‘Oil Change’ application (or any other associated applications with it eg. ‘Uninstaller). Now because the application that this folder is associated with is not going to load at startup, it should stop the folder appearing. (However, now that your application does not load automatically at startup you will now have to manually load the application when you want to use its features).

Hi there. If this is the first time you are posting a comment it will not appear immediately, but needs to be approved. This is necessary in order to combat comment spam. However, once you have submitted a comment (which is subsequently approved) you do not need to go through this process again - the site remembers who you are and auto-approves your comments. Nifty eh? Anyway, sorry about the inconvenience that this may cause for your first comment post.
