I am running Win 98 and Outlook Express on Pentium II and when I go through the ‘Start’ menu to ‘Log Off…’ I am asked if I am sure I want to log off. I confirm yes and am then asked to identify myself to Windows and enter my password (if I want to) with the promise that if I do not (enter a password) I won’t get this message again. I don’t, but still get the message every time. Once out of spite I entered my password was told it is incorrect! (more…)

In WordPerfect for DOS 5.1 my file list performs normally, but in WordPerfect Suite 8, working on the same Win95B platform, the Modified date and time no longer change when I edit a file. Newly created files have the correct date and time, but there it stays. The clock seems OK, and Norton Antivirus (latest update) shows no viruses. Is my Windows Explorer corrupted, and should I reinstall it from the CD over the existing version? (more…)

I run Win98 with Internet Explorer 5 - my problem is that when I click on hyperlinks in my e-mail in Outlook Express nothing happens apart from my modem lights flashing on and off a couple of times. I also notice that the same thing happens with some hyperlinks on web sites I bring up on IE 5.This problem only started happening a couple of weeks ago; before that everything worked perfectly. The only way I can run the above-mentioned hyperlinks is to copy them to Clipboard then paste it onto the address bar in my browser. Can you help please. (more…)

I read your column regularly to try and learn as much as I can. Your answer to a recent Y2K question regarding date changeover left me more confused than before I began. I use Win 95 and tried to check/reset my dates as you specified but my ‘Regional Settings’ Control Panel is vastly different from what you described. My sub-headings under the Date tab are:
    Calendar Type: ‘Gregorian Calendar’
Short Date: ‘Short Date sample 30/08/99′ (See *Note below)
    Short Date Style: ‘dd/MM/yy’
    Date Separator: ‘/’
Long Date: ‘Long Date sample Monday, 30 August 1999′ (See *Note below)
Long Date style ‘dddd MMMM yyyy’
*Note: The two sample locations are not highlighted and are therefore not changeable. How do I carry out the changes you state? (more…)

I have IBM Voice Type Simply Speaking Gold Ver. 3.5 and Crystal Semiconductor Sound Software. I had the volume indicator in the system tray looking normal then I went into Voice Type and it turned to mute and when I tried to un-mute it and it just turned back to mute. The sound still works but I can’t control the volume using the system tray volume control. How can I rectify this problem (I tried reinstalling The Crystal software but when I went back to Voice Type it went back to mute)? (more…)
