Disappearing drive

  • I had my basic Pentium computer upgraded with a Celeron 366. Since the upgrade, I have added another hard drive and more RAM. I have had nothing but trouble. I had a D: drive added that contained Lotus Smart Suite. My C: drive has Windows 98, Plus 98 and other things including ‘Net Needs. Like most people I am reliant on my computer and internet for work and study but the frame keeps freezing and the CTRL-ALT-DEL function does not work. I have to simply turn off the computer and when I restart I might have to do it a number of times as the screen remains blank when I switch on. Tonight I wanted to use Lotus Word Pro, only to find that the D: drive that it was loaded onto no longer exists. I would not intentionally delete D: as the program is crucial to my work. However, I no longer have a D: drive and hence its contents. Can you help me please?

This is certainly a very complex question. This problem could be a mix of hardware and/or software so it is very hard to diagnose unless you are sitting in front of the computer. I suggest that you format all of your hard drives and reinstall Windows. This will let you start fresh and during the Windows installation it should detect all of your hardware and run smoothly. If you are not confident in doing this yourself, I suggest that you take it to a professional computer technician and get them to do it for you. If you do decide to take it somewhere to get fixed don’t just tell them to reinstall Windows, it is better to tell them about your problem computer and let them do the diagnostics and the fix for the computer.

Hi there. If this is the first time you are posting a comment it will not appear immediately, but needs to be approved. This is necessary in order to combat comment spam. However, once you have submitted a comment (which is subsequently approved) you do not need to go through this process again - the site remembers who you are and auto-approves your comments. Nifty eh? Anyway, sorry about the inconvenience that this may cause for your first comment post.
