Error accessing system registry

  • Twice now in the last 2 months while the computer is starting up Win95, a Registry Problem has occurred bringing up a box with the following message: ‘Windows encountered an error accessing the system registry. You should restore the registry now & restart your computer. If you ignore this error & shut down your system you may lose data. etc… [ Restore from Backup & Restart ]‘. I pressed the Restore dialogue box but nothing seemed to happen and finally ended up rebooting the system. The follow on occurred: I had two screen setups
    1. For myself & home business with a password
    2. For my son with games icons.
The system has now lost the access into my screen setup and only goes into my son’s setup with my password. So now my Internet Access setup with all the latest downloads are unreachable and other work file icons too. What can I do? I run a Pentium 200 with 128 Ram, 3.1GB hard drive and use Windows 95.

When a registry message comes up like the one you describe, it means that your system registry is more than likely corrupted. Windows (as it mentions) tries to restore the registry from a backup of it but sometimes it can’t or the backup is corrupted as well. The Windows system registry is one of the system ‘hubs’ of Windows where a lot of your program data and Windows data is stored, so when this is corrupted some programs may not function properly or at all (like with your multiple user setup). I would explain in detail how to fix your problem here but I am limited in space. However, at Microsoft Knowledge Base I managed to find a full document with step-by-step instructions on how to fix this problem. The address is: support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/q131/4/31.asp

Hi there. If this is the first time you are posting a comment it will not appear immediately, but needs to be approved. This is necessary in order to combat comment spam. However, once you have submitted a comment (which is subsequently approved) you do not need to go through this process again - the site remembers who you are and auto-approves your comments. Nifty eh? Anyway, sorry about the inconvenience that this may cause for your first comment post.
