Wake from standby
By skid on October 25, 1999 in Windows 95/98/Me | No Comments
My system does not respond at all (mouse or keyboard) from Stand By mode and must be restarted from scratch each time. Screen savers and everything else seem to work ok, so I don’t think there is a power supply problem. The P/S is fairly new anyway. The only software I have added (and this before the problem arose) is MS Windows 98 Plus! And two elements of Lotus Smartsuite 97 (Lotus 1-2-3 and Word Pro). After repeated Windows 98 dialogue requests I cancelled the Standby option in the Shutdown box. Can you help please? How can I reinstate the facility? (more…)

Windows logon prompt
By skid on October 25, 1999 in Windows 95/98/Me | No Comments
I have Windows 95 with multiple users. When I start Windows it opens in the username “” (nothing) without prompting for me to enter my username and password. This is extremely annoying as I then have to wait till my computer (166Mhz) starts, go to the Start button, Log off then enter my username and password. I was using Windows Logon then switched to Client for Microsoft Networks then Microsoft Family Logon but there was no difference (apart from when I logged off and Network Neighborhood). I am not on a network but use multiple users. (more…)

Y2K returns
By skid on October 25, 1999 in Windows 95/98/Me | No Comments
I first emailed you re changing the dates on Regional Settings to dd/mm/yyyy to avoid the Y2K problem. (30/8/99). Since then you have written quite a bit concerning this subject in the Canberra Times. (27/9/99 and 11/10/99) but only about Windows 98 but I have Windows 95 on my system. I changed the Regional Settings to dd/mm/yyyy then ran Y2K compliance test which I downloaded (free) from the Internet. (www.ntsl.com).Unfortunately I failed the test. Test summary - Hardware clock is compatible but progression to the year 2000 fails. Manual transition is supported and it passes the 21st century Leap Year test. Obviously changing the Regional Settings date was not successful. Any ideas?

OpenGL
By skid on October 18, 1999 in Video/Graphics | No Comments
I have a PII 400 with 128Mb SDRAM and 8.4Gb HDD. I also have a RIVA TNT graphics card with 16Mb SDRAM and it is causing problems. The first problem is that the OpenGL drivers that came with the card refuse to work on any game that I have this uses this format. I contacted the manufacturer (Hercules) but they seemed unwilling to help. I then downloaded the OpenGL setup program from the web and now the card seems to work well with all of my OpenGL games except for Kingpin and other Quake II mods. In these games the computer freezes at random points and the computer has to be manually restarted. I have the latest drivers for everything on my computer and have run out of ideas. I hope that you are able to help. (more…)

Windows 98 setup errors
By skid on October 18, 1999 in Windows 95/98/Me | No Comments
I have recently up-graded my computer to the following: Pentium III-450 CPU, Gigabyte GA-BX2000 Main Board, Quantum 13Gb CX Hard Disk, Graphics Blaster RIVA TNT2 ULTRA Video Card. This is the problem that I encounter when loading Windows 98. I format the hard drive and than run set-up for Windows 98. Everything goes smoothly until the following:
1. COPYING WINDOWS98 FILES TO YOUR COMPUTER
2. ESTIMATED TIME REMAINING 21 MINUTES
3. FILE COPY PROGRESS: 100%
SYSTEM ERROR
DIVIDE BY ZERO OR OVERFLOW ERROR
After the above error the system stops loading and returns to DOS prompt. I than re-boot the computer and the system continues to load Windows 98 and no other problems occur. Can you shed some light on the above problem? (more…)
