Cannot play songs with RealPlayer

  • I have downloaded RealPlayer, Windows Media-Player and WinAmp. But now I can not play songs on RealPlayer since I have downloaded the other two players. Please tell me whether I have to change any settings. When I delete these two players the RealPlayer works fine.

I’m assuming because RealPlayer works fine that you can open files in that from the ‘File’ > ‘Open’ menu, however, you can’t open them with a double click. That is because the files are associated with the other applications which means that when they are double-clicked, Windows tells them that they can all be opened by, for example, Windows Media Player. You can change file associations by going into ‘Windows Explorer’, ‘View’ menu > ‘Folder Options’. When the dialog box appears, click the ‘File Types’ tab and you will see a list of ‘Registered File Types’. As an example we will use *.rm (RealPlayer) files. Scroll down the list until you find ‘RealMedia File’ and click on it. Down the bottom there will be a ‘File Type Details’ box which displays the file extension. There may be many Registered File Types with the same label in the scroll box but you can always tell each of them apart by their file extension. Once you have clicked ‘RealMedia File’ click the ‘Edit’ button on the right hand side of the box. From here you can edit what icon that file type has, what application it opens with, etc… However, I do not recommend that you change these settings unless you are knowledgeable about syntaxes and other system effects. I suggest that either you get a computer technician to change these settings for you or you could, as a second solution, uninstall WinAmp, Windows Media Player, and RealPlayer, then reinstall RealPlayer. The setup should now automatically associate the files with RealPlayer for you.

Hi there. If this is the first time you are posting a comment it will not appear immediately, but needs to be approved. This is necessary in order to combat comment spam. However, once you have submitted a comment (which is subsequently approved) you do not need to go through this process again - the site remembers who you are and auto-approves your comments. Nifty eh? Anyway, sorry about the inconvenience that this may cause for your first comment post.
