Right button lost

  • Recently I have lost my right button functioning (I’m left handed). I have gone into control panel/mouse but there does not seem to be any subject re this function. I have Windows 95 bought in 97. Recently my computer froze on me and I had to turn it off without shutting down properly. When I switched on again I got a message that because of the way I had switched off I had lost some 76,000 bytes. Could this be the problem?
Any suggestions re what to do please.

The bytes lost on the C: drive should not be a problem. Firstly, go into the ‘Control Panel’ > ‘Mouse’. Check to see if Windows is configured for ‘Right handed’ or ‘Left handed’ configuration. If it is right handed, double-click the Jack in the Box to check if it is working. If it is, the Jack should pop out. If it is set to ‘Left handed’, double click using the right mouse button and see what happens. You can see which mouse button to use in both cases here because it will be shaded blue on the diagram of the mouse. If both of these work we can assume that the physical mouse buttons work but if they don’t then one of them may be damaged. What brand of mouse is it? If it is a Microsoft mouse, make sure there is no third-party software trying to use the mouse. Companies such as Logitech, etc… often bundle special software/drives to use with their mice because some lines of their mice have special function buttons that need special software to drive them. Make sure no such software is present and if you are unsure, contact your mouse manufacturer. As a last resort I suggest that you uninstall then reinstall your mouse drivers. NB: If you do this you will have to navigate your computer via the keyboard since the mouse will now be disabled. Before you attempt this, make sure that you are confident with navigating via the keyboard.
