TweakUI installation

  • You recently gave advice for the downloading of the Microsoft TweakUI program. I tried this but am unable to proceed with the set up sequence as each time I right-click on the file with the .inf extension I am told that I need to insert the maker’s disk so the file ‘Tweakui.cnt’ can be loaded. I do not have this disk, although this file was among those contained in the downloaded .exe file. On booting the computer I now get the drop down window ‘RUNDLL: Error loading TWEAKUI.CPL’. The system cannot find the file specified. I am using Windows 95 and downloaded the file W95tweakui.exe.

Although the file ‘Tweakui.cnt’ is contained within the files you downloaded, the computer still thinks that the file is on a disk. You can get around this by right-clicking the ‘tweakui.inf’ file and selecting install (like you did before). When it brings up the window which asks you to put in the disk ‘TweakUI’, press the ‘Ok’ button and a box will come up where you can specify the location of the ‘Tweakui.cnt’ file. Click the bottommost button titled ‘Browse…’ and from here, a file explorer appears where you can browse your computer to find the file which you need.

Hi there. If this is the first time you are posting a comment it will not appear immediately, but needs to be approved. This is necessary in order to combat comment spam. However, once you have submitted a comment (which is subsequently approved) you do not need to go through this process again - the site remembers who you are and auto-approves your comments. Nifty eh? Anyway, sorry about the inconvenience that this may cause for your first comment post.
