Windows logon prompt

  • I have Windows 95 with multiple users. When I start Windows it opens in the username “” (nothing) without prompting for me to enter my username and password. This is extremely annoying as I then have to wait till my computer (166Mhz) starts, go to the Start button, Log off then enter my username and password. I was using Windows Logon then switched to Client for Microsoft Networks then Microsoft Family Logon but there was no difference (apart from when I logged off and Network Neighborhood). I am not on a network but use multiple users.

This question is certainly interesting as most of the questions I get regarding the Windows logon box is how to disappear the box, not how to bring it back. There could be many factors causing your Windows logon box not to appear but I cannot cover all of them in the space of this column. However, you can get step-by-step instructions on how to bring back the Windows logon box by going to this article in Microsoft Knowledge Base: support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/q141/8/58.asp. Alternatively for others who get the Windows logon box when they load Windows but do not wish to see it, you can find instructions on how to disappear the box from this article in Microsoft Knowledge Base: support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/q152/1/04.asp?FR=0.

Hi there. If this is the first time you are posting a comment it will not appear immediately, but needs to be approved. This is necessary in order to combat comment spam. However, once you have submitted a comment (which is subsequently approved) you do not need to go through this process again - the site remembers who you are and auto-approves your comments. Nifty eh? Anyway, sorry about the inconvenience that this may cause for your first comment post.
