Internet connection and changing users
-
I’m running Windows 95 with different logons for different members of the family. Each family member also has a separate mailbox with our internet service provider. The problem is that to logoff and logon as a new user in Windows 95 drops the internet connection requiring each member of the family to re-establish the connection to check their E-Mail. Is there a way to change the current user in Windows 95 without dropping an active internet connection.
You cannot keep an internet connection active when you log off one user and log onto another. When you log off a user all programs that were open in that user are closed including any active internet connections. What you can do, is use programs like Outlook Express 5 or Netscape Messenger which will allow you to set up identities and profiles. This means that you don’t have to log off each time a different person wants to use the internet. In the case of Outlook Express, you can set up a separate identity for each user. Each will be able to have their own inbox. With Netscape you can have your own profile which will allow each user to have their own separate bookmark file, email inbox, etc…. Effectively it is as if each user has their own copy of Netscape but it works from the one copy with the ability to customize itself for each separate user. Also for privacy, whenever you log into one profile you cannot access the details of another users profile unless you log out and log into that. This means that each person’s email, bookmarks, etc… are separate from all other users.
