Web email in Outlook Express

  • I have a few questions. Firstly, I want to check a Hotmail account from Outlook Express. I used the wizard to create one but it doesn’t work. The URL for the server says services.msn.com/svcs/hotmail/httpmail.asp is that right? Secondly, how do I send mail from different accounts without changing the default account using Outlook Express? Thirdly, how can I check my Yahoo account from Outlook Express? Do I need to know the Yahoo server URL? Fourthly, I have been trying to download Netscape 4 from the net. A file is downloaded which I’m supposed to open while still connected. At that point it doesn’t work. Do you know why? It says that a local error has occurred preventing the download. Finally, how can I change the dictionary in Word 97 to an Australian one instead of an US one? I would appreciate it a lot if you could answer any/all of these questions. They are troubling me a lot. Thanks.

The reason why you can’t collect your email from your Hotmail account using Outlook Express is because HTTPMail uses WebDAV extensions to collect your mail and you are probably going through a proxy server or firewall that doesn’t support this. The way to get around this is to disable proxy servers for that address. You can do this by opening up IE 5 (I am assuming you use that), going to the ‘Tools’ menu > ‘Internet Options’, click the ‘Connections’ tab, and double click your dial-up account underneath under the ‘Dial-up Settings’ heading. In the ‘Proxy Server’ area, click the ‘Advanced’ button. In the next box that appears put the address you mentioned in the heading into the ‘Exceptions’ box at the bottom of that dialog box. Turning to your second question, you can send mail from different accounts in Outlook Express. When you are composing a message (I am assuming you are using Outlook Express 5) you can click a drop down box beside ‘From:’ (where the sender is specified). This has a list of all of your mail accounts in Outlook Express and you can choose which to use to send your email. Responding to your third question I do not think that you can use Outlook Express to collect your email from your Yahoo! mail account because they do not have their servers set up to enable you to do this. Concerning your fourth question, could you please email me with more information including what file is actually downloaded, where you downloaded it from, and the exact error you get and at what point in the installation of the file the error occurs. And in response to your final question, you can change the dictionary in Word 97 to an Australian dictionary by going into Word 97 opening the ‘Tools’ menu > ‘Language’ > ‘Set Language’ and changing it to ‘English (Australian)’. Also you can click the ‘Default…’ button to make ‘English (Australian)’ the default language for Word 97.

Hi there. If this is the first time you are posting a comment it will not appear immediately, but needs to be approved. This is necessary in order to combat comment spam. However, once you have submitted a comment (which is subsequently approved) you do not need to go through this process again - the site remembers who you are and auto-approves your comments. Nifty eh? Anyway, sorry about the inconvenience that this may cause for your first comment post.
