Every night at midnight my computer springs to life even after it has been properly shut down!.I run Windows ‘98 on a Compaq Presario Pentium(R) MMX running at 166Mhz. Can you please restore my sleeping pattern without having to turn off the power to the computer every night! Thanks!

This sounds like the ‘Auto-Wakeup’ feature of Advanced Power Management (APM) on your motherboard being set for midnight. I don’t know for sure where you will find the ‘Auto-Wakeup’ feature on your computer. More than likely it will be in the BIOS setup which can normally be accessed by pressing the ‘Delete’ key during startup. I would not recommend that you go in there yourself, because it is all too easy to do major damage in there by changing some options. I suggest that before you attempt anything, you have a look through online help at the Compaq website which can be reached at this address: www.compaq.com/support/ .
