Automatic disconnect

  • I have recently upgraded to IE5 and have discovered that the disconnect reminder box that used to appear at the end of a session on IE4 does not come up. I think I recall that some months ago you provided a reader with a solution to this? I have searched the archives but cannot find it. Was I dreaming? If there is a solution to getting this disconnection reminder box to appear, I would appreciate it.

I can just remember a question like this but I can’t find it in my archives either! Maybe we were both dreaming? In any case, here is the solution to your query. In IE 5 this option is, in most cases, disabled by default. However, you can re-enable it. Go to the ‘Tools’ menu > ‘Internet Options’ > ‘Connections’ tab and click the ‘Settings’ button. In the box that appears, click the button labelled ‘Advanced’ under ‘Dial-up Settings’ and place a tick in the box next to ‘Disconnect when connection may no be longer needed’. You can also place a tick in the box ‘Disconnect if idle for XX minutes’ if you would like this to occur. If you have any other queries, please feel free to write in again.

Hi there. If this is the first time you are posting a comment it will not appear immediately, but needs to be approved. This is necessary in order to combat comment spam. However, once you have submitted a comment (which is subsequently approved) you do not need to go through this process again - the site remembers who you are and auto-approves your comments. Nifty eh? Anyway, sorry about the inconvenience that this may cause for your first comment post.
