Changing Windows 98 to Windows 95

  • I am an old user of Windows 95 and have recently upgraded to Windows 98 SE. Being an old user of Windows 95 I am not used to all of the changes in Windows 98 SE (eg. Internet Explorer 5 integration, etc…) and I actually find that the old Windows 95 interface was easier to use than Windows 98 SE. Could you outline how I can change the look and feel of Windows 98 SE back to Windows 95 while actually keeping the Windows 98 SE kernal on my computer? Thanks!

The first thing that you would want to do is to disable the ‘Active Desktop’. The Active Desktop is a feature which allows you to display your desktop as a web page. This is good for people who wish to have, for example, news tickers on their desktops but other people find it annoying. The second thing to do is to disable your folders being displayed at web pages. You can do this by opening any folder, going to the ‘View’ menu and disabling ‘as Web Page’. The third thing you may want to do is to delete the items in the ‘Quick Launch’ bar. The Quick Launch bar is the area on your start bar that has icons for programs in it. This enables you to quickly launch applications directly from the start bar. You can delete the current items in there by right-clicking on them and selecting ‘Delete’ from the menu that appears. By completing these steps you should be able to change your Windows interface so that it is more like Windows 95 while keeping most of the usability and new features which Windows 98 SE offers.

Hi there. If this is the first time you are posting a comment it will not appear immediately, but needs to be approved. This is necessary in order to combat comment spam. However, once you have submitted a comment (which is subsequently approved) you do not need to go through this process again - the site remembers who you are and auto-approves your comments. Nifty eh? Anyway, sorry about the inconvenience that this may cause for your first comment post.
