You may recall that I wrote to you about my computer freezing up and you kindly replied in the Canberra Times on 10th January. I have reinstalled Windows 98 on a new hard drive and the problem exists as before. I have no spare IRQ’s. Where do I go from here? (more…)

Windows Protection Error
By skid on January 31, 2000 in Windows 95/98/Me | No Comments
My computer is Pentium III and 450 MHz running on Windows 98. All my programs run like I expect them to do. I then got connected to the Internet. In the early days I would launch Microsoft Internet Explorer and visit web sites, again no problem. I would then use Outlook Express to download my email then a message appeared saying ‘Windows Protection Error, Please restart your computer’. All I can do is reset the computer having lost everything not saved. I brought my problem to the attention of my ISP and they added Netscape to my list of programs. I now use Netscape to receive my email and OE to send it. Can you offer any explanation. (more…)

Whenever I try to access my mail using Outlook Express, I get the following message: “The connection to the server has failed. Account: ‘apex.net.au’, Server: ‘127.0.0.1′, Protocol: POP3, Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Socket Error: 10061, Error Number: 0×800CCC0E” I can send messages, I just can’t receive them. I’ve tried rebooting, uninstalling it and reinstalling. Can you think of anything else that may help me? (more…)

56k speed not achieved
By skid on January 24, 2000 in Modem | No Comments
My ISP is OzEmail. I run windows 98, I have a Netcomm Roadster II 56k SVD and I live in Nicholls. Although I have a 56k modem, according to the Windows dialog box in the bottom of the page I only connect at 28000bps. I am into gaming such as Quake and Halflife and my ping times are 270+. Recently my friend used my modem and ISP account in Spence on his computer, he connected at 56000bps and his ping times were in the low 200’s. What is going on? Why am I connecting at 28000bps and have consistently higher ping times. I have installed all the latest drivers, used different initialisation strings, ensured my modem connect at 56k speed but to no avail. Can you help me? Would different suburbs have such a dramatic effect on ping times? (more…)
