Cannot find CARD.DLL

  • I run a Pentium II-300c with Windows 98. Recently I had a self-inflicted problem and returned the computer to base for adjustment. When the computer came back I could not call up the Card Games (Freecell). When I click on the icon the following message appears. ‘Cannot find CARD.DLL. Windows needs this file to run C:WindowsFreecell.EXE’. I have tried all sorts of things without success I hope you can help.

The problem which you are encountering is fairly easy to fix. Someone probably accidently deleted the file CARD.DLL and now your game can’t run because it is missing/has been accidently deleted. To fix this problem, just uninstall and reinstall Freecell. This can be done by going to the ‘Start’ menu > ‘Settings’ and opening ‘Control Panel’. Double-click on ‘Add/Remove Programs’ and then click on the ‘Windows Setup’ tab. In the scroll box underneath the heading ‘Components’ find and double-click on ‘Accessories’. In the next box that appears, scroll down until you find ‘Games’ and click the box with the tick in it next to ‘Games’ so the tick is removed. Click the ‘Ok’ buttons until you get out of all of the boxes. Now the games will be removed. Once this is done, repeat the above sequence but instead of clicking the box to remove the tick, click the empty box next to ‘Games’ once so that a tick appears in it. Once this is done, click the ‘Ok’ buttons to get out of all of the dialog boxes and the games will reinstall with the needed files to run them (in particular in your case, the CARD.DLL file). Make sure that you have your original Windows CD or disk(s) on hand since you may need them to reinstall the games.

Hi there. If this is the first time you are posting a comment it will not appear immediately, but needs to be approved. This is necessary in order to combat comment spam. However, once you have submitted a comment (which is subsequently approved) you do not need to go through this process again - the site remembers who you are and auto-approves your comments. Nifty eh? Anyway, sorry about the inconvenience that this may cause for your first comment post.
