Couldn’t load CFM.DLL, check BinDir in XCM.INI
-
I am operating Windows 98 SE on a Pentium 100 with a 8.4gb hard drive. When I open the ‘Control Panel’ I get the message ‘Couldn’t load CFM.DLL, check BinDir in XCM.INI’. If I click OK the Control Panel opens correctly. I have tried to find CMF.DLL unsuccessfully, both on my hard drive and Windows 98 CD. Its more a nuisance than anything else but I would like to get it fixed. Can you help please?
This error you are encountering is a recognised problem by Microsoft. It occurs when Xerox Color Manager is installed on your computer before you upgrade to Windows 95 or 98. To fix this problem, firstly go to the ‘Start’ menu > ‘Programs’ and open ‘Windows Explorer’. Go to the ‘View’ menu then ‘Folder Options’. Click the ‘View’ tab and remove the tick in the box next to ‘Hide file extensions for known file types’. Click the OK button to exit from that and then exit from the Windows Explorer. Go to the ‘Start’ menu > ‘Find’ > ‘Files or Folders’. In the ‘Named’ box, type ‘xcm*.cpl’ (without the quotes) and then click the ‘Find Now’ button. When the results are displayed, rename any copies of XCMCP.CPL and/or XCMINI.CPL so they have an ‘.OLD’ extension rather than ‘.CPL’. Once you have completed that, do a find for a file named XRCMCP.CPL. Rename this file so that it has an ‘.OLD’ extension as well. Finally, restart your computer. Now the error message should not appear anymore when you load the Control Panel.
