New video card causes system hang
-
I have purchased Apollo TNT2 Vanta 32mb video card. Now it hangs the system when it finishes loading Windows 98. I have a gigabyte 5AA mainboard with 64mb SDRAM.
Problems concerning video cards are normally related to the video driver. In answering your question I am assuming that because the video card you have is very recent, the drivers are designed for Windows 9x rather than Windows 3.1 (if this is not the case, please feel free to contact me again). Windows has a built in system for troubleshooting video problems. In the control panel, there is a slider which can be adjusted to change the way in which Windows uses the video card. Go to the ‘Start’ menu > ‘Settings’ > ‘Control Panel’, and open the ‘System’ control panel. In the dialogue box that appears, click the ‘Performance’ tab and then the ‘Graphics’ button under the ‘Advanced Settings’ heading. You will notice here there is a slider which can be adjusted. As you look at it now it should be on the ‘Full’ setting (since that is normally default). I suggest that you move it down one notch, exit out of the boxes by pressing the ‘Ok’ buttons and then restart your computer. Repeat this process of moving it down a notch from its previous setting each time you restart your computer until you reach a setting where your computer functions without hanging. This is the most common way to fix video problems such as yours but if you are still having trouble, please visit the following Microsoft Knowledge Base article which has some more advanced ways to solve video problems: support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q127/1/39.asp.
