Standard VGA monitor

  • I recently upgraded to Windows 98 and I’m having a rather annoying problem. Somehow my machine seems to think I have a standard VGA monitor with only 16 colours. I have gone through the display settings and tried to change the colour palette but I have a choice of only 2 or 16 colours. I suspect that I will need to reinstall the display driver but since the machine came with everything on board I am not sure what sort of driver I am looking for. The monitor is a 17″ OSB but the user instructions give no clue to what sort of driver to use. My driver and utility disk mentions 2 drivers FYI Trident 9750 AGP/VGA and FYI Trident 9850 AGP/VGA that sound likely candidates - but I have no way of knowing which would be suitable. Any suggestions would be most welcome.

I would say that it would be a good idea to work with the two drivers that are on the disk. In a subsequent email you mentioned that you have currently installed as your display adapter ‘Standard PCI Graphics Adapter (VGA)’. This is more than likely the problem because the drivers on your disk are for a graphics card which is in the AGP (Advanced Graphics Port) inside your computer. The current driver you have installed thinks that your video card is installed in a PCI (Peripheral Component Interconnect) expansion slot in your computer. That may cause some confusion and errors (like your computer only being able to display 16 colours). I suggest that you install one of the drivers which are on the driver disk and if that doesn’t work, I suggest that you install the other driver instead. If you are still having problems, the reason your computer will only display 16 colors may be that your monitor is incorrectly configured. If this is the case, I suggest you go to the monitor settings (in the display control panel) and change the monitor type to something like ‘Super VGA 1024 x 768′. As your monitor is a 17″ you should not have any problems with a resolution setting such as that.
