General Protection Fault in ADVERT.DLL
By skid on February 28, 2000 in Internet and email | No Comments
I have windows 95 running on a Pentium 150. A problem arose after installing Netscape Communicator 4.7, but before this, Netscape 4.61 was installed but didn’t play up at all. About 75% of the time running this program causes a General Protection Fault in ADVERT.DLL. This dialogue box is unclosable (even the Program Dialogue box is inaccessible) but everything else runs normally. I uninstalled Version 4.7 and reinstalled 4.61 thinking that it would solve the problem. But it still happens. In the process of shutting down, it freezes at the Windows 95 logo and never actually shuts down. I have to resort to resetting the computer in these situations and let Scandisk before loading Windows again. Everything is still fine and there are no bad clusters detected. This is very frustrating and I am not prepared to reformat my hard drive. Your help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks. (more…)

COM port problems
By skid on February 28, 2000 in General | No Comments
I’m having problems with my com ports (specifically, the port that my modem is attached to) in Windows 98. Pretty much to the second, the machine goes into a hard lock 5 minutes after a successful connect. I have no problems connecting under other OSs, such as GNU/Linux, *BSD, QNX, and emulated DOS mode in Windows. Could you please advise me on what would be the problem. Thanks. (more…)

Downloading files and Colour adjustment methods will not be available error
By skid on February 28, 2000 in Internet and email | No Comments
I would appreciate your advice about the following 2 problems I’ve encountered recently:
(1) A file downloaded from the internet to disk/desktop turns up in Wordpad in computer language. How can I change this into plain English?
(2) An annoying error message, every time I want to use the printer ,has suddenly decided to appear: “Canon BJC-210 - Internal Error: Colour adjustment methods will not be available.” I’m using Windows 95 and my current ISP is AOL. Any help you can provide would be much appreciated. Thanks. (more…) -
Backup Outlook Express email
By skid on February 21, 2000 in Internet and email | No Comments
Please advise me what the best way to back-up my email. I am on Windows 98 and use Outlook Express version 4.72. I would like to back-up my email. I know I can export from Outlook Express but I would like to be able to copy the required files out to a zip drive and then restore them into Outlook Express if necessary. Can I do this using the export method? I also notice that the system stores my mail in the following folder. C:WINDOWSApplication DataMicrosoftOutlook ExpressMail. Can I simply back these folders up and then restore them if need be - will Outlook Express read whatever is there or is there some sort of control file that would reject old data? Thank you. (more…)

Heavy headings
By skid on February 21, 2000 in Printer | No Comments
Is there any way that I can avoid wasting ink on the dense headings when printing out Hotmail messages? It’s really only the messages that are worth the rather expensive ink, not the headings, so it would be good to be able to avoid them. Any tips? (more…)
