Drive A system error
-
Three months ago I put together a system using the WinChip C6 (roughly equivalent to a Pentium 200) with a ASUS P/I-P55T2P4 M/B and 32 mb RAM and had no problems - ran Windows 98 very well and a host of applications including internet. Two weeks ago the system hung while I was running some applications, I suspect I was pushing it a bit in terms of available memory. When I rebooted, I got the following start up message:
“Award bootlock Bios V1.0 Bios ROM Checksum error detecting floppy drive A media….. Drive A error system halt” accompanied by an error noise. I changed the floppy drive, and got identical results, so its not the drive. I seem to remember reading about a drive A error associated with Winchip in their old web site (at www.winchip.com/index2.html) but there’s no mention in their current site (www.centtech.com/)When visiting the AwardBIOS POST (Power On Self Test) error message page (www.phoenix.com/pcuser/bios-award-postcode.pdf) I found that the error message you are receiving (BIOS ROM checksum error) is the actual problem. You can disregard the subsequent Drive A error. A BIOS ROM checksum error occurs when the checksum of the BIOS code in the BIOS chip is incorrect, which indicates that the BIOS code may be corrupt. I’m afraid in your case, the only way to solve your problem is to replace the BIOS. Contact your computer dealer/technician to confirm this is the problem and replace the BIOS if necessary.
