Readme files scrolling automatically

  • Many software packages come with an extensive readme file in their file structure. So far I have been unable to stop the readme file from scrolling down the monitor so that I can read it. I have tried many combinations of key strokes with the ‘Scroll Lock’ key but to no avail. The on-line help is no help! Is there a way to stop a readme (or any other text file) from scrolling so that it can be read one page at a time please. My operating system is Windows 95.

I have to admit that I have never come across a problem like this before. Despite this, I will still try and solve it. If this problem occurs in just Notepad (which I assume is the application where the problem is occurring) then it may be a problem with Notepad application. In that case, the first thing you should do is to reinstall Notepad. The problem with this however, is that I am not certain whether you can uninstall Notepad from the ‘Add/Remove Programs’ control panel. To uninstall Notepad you may need to delete the actual exe file and extract a new copy from your Windows master disks/CD. If this the case, I suggest that you download either Mini Notetab (www.softseek.com/Utilities/Text_File_Tools/Notepad_Replacements/Review_12742_index.html) or NotesPad (www.softseek.com/Utilities/Text_File_Tools/Notepad_Replacements/Review_12166_index.html). Both are replacements for the default Windows Notepad and have a lot of useful functions. However, if you are experiencing this problem in other applications (be it word processing applications or not) then there may be a problem with your mouse. Go to ‘Start’ menu > ‘Settings’ > ‘Control Panel’ and open the ‘Mouse’ control panel. Some brands of mice have their own special settings. For instance, one setting which my mouse has, is to do a continuous scroll down the screen so you can use the computer monitor as an auto-cue. A setting such as this may be what is causing your problem. Since all mice are different, I suggest that you have a look around your mouse settings and see what you can find (and check that you are not accidentally pressing the down key when viewing a text file).

Hi there. If this is the first time you are posting a comment it will not appear immediately, but needs to be approved. This is necessary in order to combat comment spam. However, once you have submitted a comment (which is subsequently approved) you do not need to go through this process again - the site remembers who you are and auto-approves your comments. Nifty eh? Anyway, sorry about the inconvenience that this may cause for your first comment post.
