No sounds in Windows Media Player

  • Could you please help? I am unable to get sound when playing wave files in Windows Media Player 6.4 .I have checked through the help files and the Microsoft Knowledge Base but have been unable to solve the problem .The wave files seem to be OK because they play when using them in wave studio and creative waves etc. I cannot listen to the radio through the computer because there is no sound. All the other functions work. The midi files all function OK using windows media player. My system is a Dell Dimension XPS M200s with 64 Meg Ram and using Windows 95.

If you are trying to get wave files to play through the Media Player, the files must be associated with the Media Player application. The wave files are probably associated with Wave Studio, which is one of the Creative applications that came with your sound card. When multiple applications are installed on your system that do the same function, like play audio files, there’s bound to be problems and conflicts. The first thing to check is, what files are associated with Media Player. To do this, open Media Player and select View > Options > Formats and check the boxes for the file types that you want Media Player to play. The general procedure to check which application is associated with a file type is: Open Windows Explorer and select a file from the right-hand column. Hold the left Shift key and the right Mouse button at the same time to bring up a dialogue box. You will notice that one of the selections is “Open with”. Choose this option and select the application you want to open from the “Open with” selection box. Tick ‘Always use this program to open this file” and click OK. If Media Player still won’t play the file type you want, de-install and re-install it. I would like to thank Dennis Walters for supplying the answer to this question. If you still are having trouble, please contact me again.

Hi there. If this is the first time you are posting a comment it will not appear immediately, but needs to be approved. This is necessary in order to combat comment spam. However, once you have submitted a comment (which is subsequently approved) you do not need to go through this process again - the site remembers who you are and auto-approves your comments. Nifty eh? Anyway, sorry about the inconvenience that this may cause for your first comment post.
