Change ZIP file association

  • I downloaded a program in a zip file from the net. When unzipping I was prompted to select which program I would like to use to open these files. This happened because I went to open the wrong file first and during the process I inadvertently selected ‘Dr Watson’ to open the file and did not uncheck the box which says ‘always use this program to open this type of file. Consequently I cannot use the files. Can you please help?

To fix this problem you will have to change the file association for zip files so that they open with WinZIP (or your equivalent zip extractor) rather than Dr Watson. You can do this by going to the ‘Start’ menu > ‘Programs’ and open ‘Windows Explorer’. In Windows Explorer, go to the ‘Tools’ menu and click ‘Folder Options’. In the box that appears, click the ‘File Types’ tab and scroll down the ‘Registered files type’ list until you find the ZIP extension (which should be one of the last on the list). Once you have found the ZIP file type (on the list), double click on it and it should bring up the properties for the ZIP file type, and in particular, the option to change which program should be used to open files with the ZIP extension. From here you can change the program from Dr. Watson to WinZIP (or your equivalent ZIP file extractor). However, if you do not want to go through all of this trouble, you can reinstall WinZIP which should reinstate the correct file associations as well.

Hi there. If this is the first time you are posting a comment it will not appear immediately, but needs to be approved. This is necessary in order to combat comment spam. However, once you have submitted a comment (which is subsequently approved) you do not need to go through this process again - the site remembers who you are and auto-approves your comments. Nifty eh? Anyway, sorry about the inconvenience that this may cause for your first comment post.
