Windows cannot find PROGRAM …needed for opening files of type URL

  • I am getting a message ” Windows cannot find PROGRAM …needed for opening files of type ‘URL: HyperText Transfer Protocol’ I use Windows 98 SE, IE5 and Outlook Express. This has happened before when fiddling with my internet connection (not recently). Can you help?

This problem is probably occurring because you uninstalled another web browser which was associated with HTML documents (eg. Netscape). The problem arises when the association still exists but the program, in this case a web browser, has been uninstalled. You will find a full explanation of how to reinstate the file association with Internet Explorer (which I am assuming is your current web browser) by reference to the Microsoft Knowledge Base article at: support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/q191/2/19.asp.

Hi there. If this is the first time you are posting a comment it will not appear immediately, but needs to be approved. This is necessary in order to combat comment spam. However, once you have submitted a comment (which is subsequently approved) you do not need to go through this process again - the site remembers who you are and auto-approves your comments. Nifty eh? Anyway, sorry about the inconvenience that this may cause for your first comment post.
