Word help not accessible

  • I use Word6 in Office 4.2 under Windows 95B. Recently some of Word Help became inaccessible. The contents boxes appeared, but the hypertext links were dead. I uninstalled Word (including shared resources) using Office Setup and reinstalled it. Now Word Help will not work at all. Attempting to use Help Contents, Search or Index leads to the diagnostic “Winhlp32: An error has occurred in your program ….. Close or Ignore”. Closing leads to the diagnostic “Winhlp32: This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down ….” with Details “Winhlp32 caused an invalid page fault in WHLP16T.DLL ….”. Can you please tell me why this has occurred and how I can fix it.

The problem that you are experiencing is a recognised problem by Microsoft. The reason it is occurring is because the installation of Word 6 also installs a Microsoft IntelliMouse TSR (terminate and stay resistant) application which interferes with a section of the help file. Due to the length and complexity of the solution to the problem, I can’t put it in this column which is why I will refer you to an article in Microsoft Knowledge Base. This article can be found at: support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/q148/1/17.asp . Should you have any problems interpreting or applying the advice contained in Microsoft Knowledge Base, please feel free to contact me again.

Hi there. If this is the first time you are posting a comment it will not appear immediately, but needs to be approved. This is necessary in order to combat comment spam. However, once you have submitted a comment (which is subsequently approved) you do not need to go through this process again - the site remembers who you are and auto-approves your comments. Nifty eh? Anyway, sorry about the inconvenience that this may cause for your first comment post.
