Sound recorder not working

  • My Sound Recorder doesn’t work. The microphone is OK as I have tried it on another computer. Please advise what might be the problem. The operating system is Windows 98.

I am assuming that when you say your Sound Recorder isn’t working, you mean Windows Sound Recorder and that when you try and record using your microphone nothing is recorded. The most common cause of this problem is that your microphone’s volume is either muted or is down so low that it isn’t audible. You can check this by double-clicking on the speaker icon in your system tray and then move the ‘Line In’ mixer slider toward the top (NB: this could be loud so be ready to slide it back down fast), and make sure that the muted box is not selected. If that doesn’t work, go to the ‘Start’ menu > ‘Settings’ > ‘Control Panel’ and open the ‘Multimedia’ control panel. Click through all the tabs until you find an area named ‘Sound Recording’. Make sure under the ‘Preferred Device’ heading that your sound card is selected. Thirdly, I suggest that you reinstall the Sound Recorder. This can be done by going to the ‘Start’ menu > ‘Settings’ > ‘Control Panel’ and open the ‘Add/Remove Programs’ control panel. If you still have problems after trying these solutions, please write into me again with more specific details of your problem (eg. what brand/model is your soundcard, what actually happens when you try and record audio using your microphone, etc…).

Hi there. If this is the first time you are posting a comment it will not appear immediately, but needs to be approved. This is necessary in order to combat comment spam. However, once you have submitted a comment (which is subsequently approved) you do not need to go through this process again - the site remembers who you are and auto-approves your comments. Nifty eh? Anyway, sorry about the inconvenience that this may cause for your first comment post.
