Page setup slows computer

  • I am running WordPerfect 9 on a 486 DX100 with 32 RAM and 1 gig hard disk with Windows 95. I have a Canon BJC-2000SP printer. When I use Page Setup to change from portrait to landscape or vice versa the setup screen greys out for a minute and generally after this response times and performance become so hopeless I have to shut down the program. I have made extra space on the hard disk and used the defragmenting program to no effect. I would appreciate your help.

Firstly, I would like to apologise for the wait in answering your question. I spoke to one of my colleagues who is running WordPerfect 9 on a Pentium 133Mhz. He says that he also experiences the same problem, however his grey out only lasts for about five seconds. This means that what you are experiencing is normal, however, it seems that your installation of WordPerfect doesn’t like the pause and collapses. I suggest that you reinstall WordPerfect and install the latest service packs for WordPerfect (which can be downloaded from www.wordperfect.com). If the problem persists, then as a trial, uninstall WordPerfect from your computer and install it on a friend’s or colleague’s higher performance PC (eg. Pentium 200Mhz or higher) to see if the same problem occurs (NB: Remember to uninstall WordPerfect from your friend’s computer after you are done). If the problem reoccurs, then it is probably a problem with your copy so I suggest that you take it back and ask for a replacement. However, if WordPerfect runs ok, the problem probably lies with the performance of your computer. Your computer is fairly slow so it could be collapsing under the pressure of the operation. In this case, the best thing to do would be to upgrade your computer.

Hi there. If this is the first time you are posting a comment it will not appear immediately, but needs to be approved. This is necessary in order to combat comment spam. However, once you have submitted a comment (which is subsequently approved) you do not need to go through this process again - the site remembers who you are and auto-approves your comments. Nifty eh? Anyway, sorry about the inconvenience that this may cause for your first comment post.
