Performance Analyser Program for Windows errors
-
When I try to open the help in Performance Analyser Program for Windows (PAWIN v1.3) I get three error messages. Firstly, ‘Help Navigator can’t initiate connection with WinHelp’. When I click the ‘Ok’ button the second message appears, which reads ‘Winhlp32: An error has occurred in your program. To keep working anyway, click ‘Ignore’ and save your work in a new file. To quit this program click ‘Close’. Clicking the ‘Close’ button produces the third error message stating ‘Winhlp32: This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down. If the problem persists, contact the program vendor’. Under ‘Details’ it says that ‘Winhlp32 caused an invalid page fault in module WHLP16T.DLL at….’. I have a Thinkpad 770Z with Windows 98 SE installed. However, the strange thing is that I can load PAWIN onto my other computer (a Thinkpad 765D) with Windows 95 on it with no problems (I get the first message but after that everything is ok). I upgraded this computer to Windows 98 Second Edition as well without any problems occurring in PAWIN. Why is this problem only occurring on my new 770Z and not my old 765D as both machines are almost identical (ie. same operating system, same PAWIN files, etc…)?
Firstly, if you have IntelliMouse software installed on your problem computer this could be causing the problem. This is a recognised problem by Microsoft and you can find instructions on how to fix this at support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/q148/1/17.asp . If the problems are still persisting after trying those instructions, I suggest that you uninstall the IntelliMouse Software (if you haven’t already done this per the instructions at the above URL), uninstall PAWIN, then reinstall PAWIN. If your problem is resolved, but you still want to use the features of IntelliMouse, you could try to install the newest version of the IntelliMouse software (version 3.1a) which can be found at www.microsoft.com/products/hardware/mouse/driver/drivers_pc31a.htm . However, if the problem still persists, we will have to narrow your problem down to either PAWIN or Windows itself. If the problem is with Windows, it would probably be due to a corrupt WINHLP32.EXE and/or WHLP16T.DLL file(s). This means that help files in other programs would also be having trouble. Go into several other programs on your computer and see if the help files work or if they produce errors. If they don’t, then it is probably a problem with PAWIN itself. However, if they produce errors, then it is probably a problem with Windows and more than likely due to a corrupt WINHLP32.EXE and/or WHLP16T.DLL file(s). In this case, you will need to get a healthy copy of these files from somewhere. One of the ways you can do this is to extract a new copy of these files off your Windows 98 SE CD. However, this is a complex procedure especially if you are a novice. So to make life easier, I suggest that you should take the simple option of backing up all essential data and then reinstall Windows. I know that this is a hassle but it should not be a big problem considering you have another computer which you can use in the event that something goes wrong during the reinstallation of Windows. However, if the problem only seems to be isolated to the PAWIN help, it is more than likely a problem with PAWIN (possibly PAWIN’s help file is corrupt). In this case, I suggest that you firstly try to reinstall PAWIN. If this does not resolve your problem, I suggest that you download a new copy of PAWIN off the internet and install that.
