Deleting Internet Explorer history
-
I use a shared PC running Internet Explorer 5. For privacy I always delete my history folder when I quit. However, I’ve just found out that the ‘View’ and ‘Search’ function underneath the ‘History’ bar does not seem to be deleted. ‘Sites visited today’ does not respond to the delete command. Is there a way to disable this aspect of the History function or to delete all content?
Firstly, open Internet Explorer and go to the ‘View’ or ‘Tools’ menu (depending on your version of Windows) and open ‘Internet Options’. In the ‘General’ tab under the ‘History’ heading change ‘Days to keep pages in history’ to ‘0′. Click the ‘Advanced’ tab and scroll down the ‘Settings’ until you find ‘Security’. This has an option named ‘Empty Temporary Internet Files folder when browser is closed’. Enable this option. Click ‘Ok’ to close the Internet Options window. Now when you close your web browser, Internet Explorer’s temporary internet files should be deleted. However, this doesn’t necessarily mean that Internet Explorer’s history will be deleted. If you want to selectively delete a history entry, you could do this manually. To do this, open the history in Internet Explorer, click an item, and press the ‘Delete’ key. However, this isn’t very efficient as you will have to do that for each and every history item. A faster way to do this is to go into the C:WINDOWSHISTORY directory, find Internet Explorer’s history, select all of the history items at once, and delete them all in one go. If you get tired of doing this, there is a piece of software named Window Washer which could help you. This can automatically delete your internet browsers history, cache, cookies, drop down address bar, etc… You can download the shareware version of this and find out more information about this utility by going to www.webroot.com/washer.htm.
