Drag and drop

  • When I try to drag and drop icons on the desktop or files/folders in Windows Explorer nothing happens. Clicking on the icon (or files/folders) shows that the file/folder is active (because it is highlighted) but the icon (or files/folders) will not show any sign of moving. About the same time, I have encountered another problem with the Explorer 5.01 browser. Previously, when holding down the shift key and clicking the left mouse button, a new window would open up to the link. Now an empty window opens up. The closest I came to finding a solution to this problem is a problem encountered with Norton Antivirus which sounded similar. However, I am only using VET and not Norton Antivirus. Everything else in Windows functions fine. I also checked in Safe Mode, and the drag problem still occurs there as well. I recently downloaded several software programs off the net to deal with registry problems, etc. So I wonder if something may have occurred when I used one of these programs. Otherwise I have been operating as usual. I am running Windows 95.

As the problem occurs in Safe Mode as well, we can assume that your problem is caused by something other than an open application on your computer. Problems like the one you are experiencing are normally very hard to track down as they are caused by something wrong in Windows. I also encountered the same problem with Windows 98 on my machine but instead of the files not moving, my explorer simply crashed. I fixed this problem by reinstalling Windows. I know you don’t want to hear this, but I think that the only way to fix your problem would be to backup all data on your computer and reinstall Windows, otherwise we could be here for years trying to figure out the source of the problem. This should also fix your Internet Explorer problem. Again, sorry for the inconvenience of this solution.

Hi there. If this is the first time you are posting a comment it will not appear immediately, but needs to be approved. This is necessary in order to combat comment spam. However, once you have submitted a comment (which is subsequently approved) you do not need to go through this process again - the site remembers who you are and auto-approves your comments. Nifty eh? Anyway, sorry about the inconvenience that this may cause for your first comment post.
