Windows Explorer auto refresh

  • I have Windows 98 Second Edition. When I move, copy, rename, etc… a file in Windows Explorer it does not show changes to a directory immediately, instead I have to use F5 to refresh the screen (even if the change is done on the explorer screen itself). For example, I rename a file and as soon as I move the cursor away the display reverts to the old file name until I refresh the screen. I could not find any option anywhere that sets this behaviour. Any suggestions?

You can fix this problem by enabling auto-refresh in Windows Explorer. This can be done by changing a value in the registry. Go to the ‘Start’ menu > ‘Run’, type ‘regedit’ (without the quotes), and press the ‘Ok’ button. The Registry Editor will appear and from here, navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESystemCurrentControlSetControlUpdate. Once you have arrived here, double-click on ‘UpdateMode’ in the right pane and, in the window that appears, set the value as ‘00′ (without the quotes). Click ‘Ok’ to close the window, close the Registry Editor (’Registry’ menu > ‘Exit’) and restart your computer.

Hi there. If this is the first time you are posting a comment it will not appear immediately, but needs to be approved. This is necessary in order to combat comment spam. However, once you have submitted a comment (which is subsequently approved) you do not need to go through this process again - the site remembers who you are and auto-approves your comments. Nifty eh? Anyway, sorry about the inconvenience that this may cause for your first comment post.
