C:DIR00001 file or directory is damaged and is currently unusable
-
I would like to update my Microsoft Word application from Word 7.0 to Word 2000. When I load the setup program it says that I must first run the Microsoft ScanDisk to make sure my C drive is Ok. When I run ScanDisk a message appears saying ‘ScanDisk detected an invalid long filename entry on this drive but was unable to fix it’. The only option is to press Ok (which I do). ScanDisk keeps checking but another problem comes up under Directory Structure ‘The C:DIR00001 file or directory is damaged and is currently unusable’. When I click the ‘Fix It’ button the above message just continues to appear and I end up having to cancel the operation. When I look at my C: drive the ‘DIR00001′ file is there but I cannot delete the file. I also tried to delete this directory through the MS-DOS mode of the computer by using the command ‘del C:DIR00001′ (suggested by a friend) but the message ‘Path not found’ appears. What is this file and can I delete it somehow? Any advice would be greatly appreciated as all I want to do is update my Word application.
I am assuming that this problem is occurring when running ScanDisk in Windows as the Word 2000 setup runs in Windows. If you read the solution (see above) to Gordon’s problem then you will probably find that the solution I gave is totally contradictory to your problem. While Gordon’s problem can be solved by running ScanDisk in Windows, your problem is actually being caused by ScanDisk in Windows! I have had a look around the internet but I cannot seem to find any similar problems to yours. I also investigated if it would be possible to disable the ScanDisk check before installing Word 2000 but, unfortunately, to no avail. Your best bet would be to contact Microsoft technical support and ask them for some assistance. I am under the impression that Microsoft provides non-chargeable support for any installation problems users may be having. However, you must register your Microsoft product before taking advantage of this service. Another option would be to ask the retailer from whom you purchased Word 2000. In any case, if any readers have any suggestions please send them in.
