Floppy drive not working

  • We have a Packard Bell, Pentium 100Mhz with Windows 95. A few weeks ago our Disk Drive (A) ceased to function. We have gone to My Computer on the desktop which indicates that it is functioning properly, however when we place a disk in the drive and try to access the disk we get an error. Also, when we boot the computer we also get an error with the A: drive. How can this be fixed?

There could be a number of problems with your disk drive. The problem is not likely to be caused by Windows as you are also getting an error during boot (I assume that it is during the POST - power on self test). These errors normally indicate that there is something actually wrong on the hardware side. The problem could be as simple as a loose connection to your disk drive inside the computer or it could be a problem with the physical disk drive. I cannot be more specific about this going by the information you have sent me. Could you possibly send me some more information on your computer. In particular, what are the exact error messages you get during boot up and when you try and access the drive within Windows. Also, was there anything which happened leading up to this problem or did it just occur out of the blue? Please email, post, or fax the answers to me as it will greatly help my investigation of your problem.

Hi there. If this is the first time you are posting a comment it will not appear immediately, but needs to be approved. This is necessary in order to combat comment spam. However, once you have submitted a comment (which is subsequently approved) you do not need to go through this process again - the site remembers who you are and auto-approves your comments. Nifty eh? Anyway, sorry about the inconvenience that this may cause for your first comment post.
