Reinstall the ODBC components to ensure proper operation

  • When I went into safe mode in Windows 95 to check on a modem problem, I was prompted with the following message: “The ODBC resource DLL C:/Windows/System/ODBCINT.DLL is a different version than the ODBC setup DLL C:/Windows/System/ODBCCP32.DLL. You need to reinstall the ODBC components to ensure proper operation”. Could you tell me what that means and how to correct it, if at all necessary? The system seems to run ok as it is.

This problem sometimes occurs when you install some new software and it overwrites your existing ODBCINT.DLL and/or ODBCCP32.DLL files with newer or older versions of the file(s). If your system runs ok apart from this, it is probably best that you leave your computer as it is. However, if this problem does have side effects or you really want to get rid of the error message, this can be corrected by extracting a new version of ODBCINT.DLL and ODBCCP32.DLL from your original Windows 95 CD. This is quite an involved matter to explain so your best bet would be to have a look at the Microsoft Knowledge Base article ‘How to Extract Original Compressed Windows Files’. This can be found at support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q129/6/05.asp. Everything you need to know about extracting files from your Windows 95 CD is provided in this article. In particular, it gives instructions on how to find the files you need (in your case, ODBCINT.DLL and ODBCCP32.DLL) and how to extract the files. Once you have extracted the files, simply copy them over the existing files. If you don’t know where the existing files are, use the ‘Find files or folders’ utility which can be found on the ‘Start’ menu.

Hi there. If this is the first time you are posting a comment it will not appear immediately, but needs to be approved. This is necessary in order to combat comment spam. However, once you have submitted a comment (which is subsequently approved) you do not need to go through this process again - the site remembers who you are and auto-approves your comments. Nifty eh? Anyway, sorry about the inconvenience that this may cause for your first comment post.
