There is an invalid long filename on this drive

  • Ever since I recently installed a new 10.2gB hard disk drive, ScanDisk has run at startup the message “There is an invalid long filename on this drive which ScanDisk is unable to fix”. How can I fix this?

For some reason you may be getting a shortened version of the error message as the full error message reads ‘ScanDisk detected an invalid long filename entry on this drive but was unable to fix it. To fix this problem, run ScanDisk for Windows’. You should be able to fix your problem by running the Windows version of ScanDisk. You can find this by going to the ‘Start’ menu > ‘Programs’ > ‘Accessories’ > ‘System Tools’ and running ‘ScanDisk’. However, if this does not fix your problem you may want to simply turn off the DOS ScanDisk Long File Name (LFN) check. This can be done by going to the C:WINDOWSCOMMAND directory and editing the ’scandisk.ini’ file. Once the file is open there are instructions on how to disable the LFN check. Thanks to Bryan H. for his assistance with this problem.

Hi there. If this is the first time you are posting a comment it will not appear immediately, but needs to be approved. This is necessary in order to combat comment spam. However, once you have submitted a comment (which is subsequently approved) you do not need to go through this process again - the site remembers who you are and auto-approves your comments. Nifty eh? Anyway, sorry about the inconvenience that this may cause for your first comment post.
