Automatic disconnect, and change drive letter assignments
-
I am running Windows 98 SE and Internet Explorer 5.5 on a Pentium III. Until a couple of weeks ago when I exited Internet Explorer or Outlook Express I got a message saying ‘Disconnect [from the internet] now or stay connected?’. I no longer get this message. If I’m lucky I get a message, a few minutes later, saying my internet connection has been idle for X minutes and will be disconnected in one more minute. I’ve made sure that Internet Explorer is set up to disconnect when the connection may no longer be needed, and I’ve checked the registry entries for EnableAutodisconnect and EnableExitDisconnect and are both set to to ‘01 00 00 00′. The most recent bit of surgery done to my computer is when I had a CD-RW drive installed. With the drive came ‘Adaptec Easy CD Creator 4′ and ‘Adaptec DirectCD Wizard 3.01c S22′. Installation of the new drive as E: meant that my zip drive previously E:, became B:. By the way, any advice on how to change drive letters around?
When looking around the internet I found an article in Microsoft Knowledge Base which you may find useful: support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q235/6/66.ASP. Although this article is related to Internet Explorer 5 for Windows 98, it may be worth a look and contacting Microsoft for the patch. On the internet, I also discovered that other people are experiencing the same problem as you after installing Adaptec Easy CD Creator. When they uninstalled it, the disconnect box reappeared but when they reinstalled it the box disappeared again. Try uninstalling this Adaptec Easy CD Creator (and possibly Adaptec DirectCD Wizard as well) and see if it resolves the problem. If it does, you will have to do a trade off between your CD-RW and the Internet Explorer feature which automatically disconnects you from the internet when closing IE. Personally, I would choose the CD-RW drive. If the problem persists, please contact me again and I will see if I can find some more possible solutions for you. Regarding your question on changing drive letters, have a look at www.annoyances.org/cgi-bin/ce-showtopic/004_024. However, do not attempt to change the letters of any drives unless you are confident that you know what you are doing. It could produce unknown problems. Do so at your own risk.
