A page fault has occurred in MSVCRT.DLL
By skid on December 18, 2000 in Windows 95/98/Me | No Comments
I have a Compaq Presario Celeron 466 with an ATI Rage Pro graphics card. Every so often the game ‘Civilisation: Call to Power’ will quit to the desktop and sometimes displays the error ‘A page fault has occurred in MSVCRT.DLL’. This problem also occurs in ‘Vampire Masquerade - The Redemption’ but a lot more often. Can you help? (more…)

An ActiveX control on this page is not safe
By skid on December 18, 2000 in Internet and email | No Comments
I have an Athlon 600 Mhz, 64mb RAM, 15gig hard drive, and running Windows 98SE using Internet Explorer 5.5. When using Outlook Express (and also other applications) sometimes we get a warning message comes up saying ‘An ActiveX control on this page is not safe. Your current security settings prohibit running unsafe controls on this page. As a result this page may not display as intended’. Furthermore, sometimes it performs ‘an illegal operation and the current application will be shut down’. Can you explain what ActiveX does and how I can remedy this? (more…)

Permissions on Netscape mail files
By skid on December 11, 2000 in Internet and email | No Comments
When I had to completely rebuild my system I kept a copy of my Netscape ‘Users’ directory but not my ‘Communicator’ directory. After the rebuild, Netscape won’t let me access my restored mail files because I don’t have ‘permission’. Any ideas? (more…)

Cordless phone causing dial-up issues
By skid on December 11, 2000 in Modem | No Comments
Last week I replaced one of my home phones with a cordless phone. The base connection plugs into the normal phone socket on the wall. Since then I’ve had to dial up my ISP 2 or 3 times each session before establishing a stable connection. I made sure that Call Waiting was switched off before dialling up but the problem persisted. However, since I started unplugging the phone base from the wall before logging on the problem has stopped. Is this likely to just be a coincidence based merely on a run of bad luck or do cordless phones have any special reputation for interference? (more…)

InoculateIT cannot scan some files
By skid on December 4, 2000 in Security and malware | No Comments
I run InoculateIT, however, when a scan has been completed, it indicates that six files could not be scanned. They are:
C:WINDOWSCOOKIESINDEX.DAT
C:WINDOWSWIN386.SWP
C:WINDOWSHISTORYHISTORY.IE5INDEX.LOG
C:WINDOWSTEMPORARY INTERNET FILESCONTENT.IE5INDEX.DAT
C:PROGRAM FILESINOCULATEIT PEVIRUS LOG
C:PHOTO DLXAFTER DARK (10 various ZIP files)
InoculateIT has scanned over 22,000 files but indicates the above could not be scanned. Is this a problem? Also, I have set my task scheduler to automatically run InoculateIT every Monday night. However, on the Tuesday morning I find that though the program has come onto the screen, it has not actually performed the scan. I have to manually click the ‘Go’ button with the mouse to activate the scan which then takes about 15 minutes before it is finished as it freezes several times during the process but then automatically unfreezes and completes its task. Is there a way the program can complete a full scan by itself? I am running Windows 98. (more…)
