Problem with Hpsjvxd.vxd when installing scanner
By skid on January 29, 2001 in Imaging devices | No Comments
We had a Pentium 75Mhz running Windows 95 to which we added a HP ScanJet 5100C colour scanner. We had no problems with this setup until we upgraded to a Pentium III 600Mhz running Windows 98SE. Now I’m having problems installing the scanner. I did something wrong on my first attempt and in attempting to fix it in the Control Panel I think I inadvertently deleted something which I shouldn’t have. Now, every time the computer boots up, a message appears saying ‘Cannot find a device file that may be needed. Registry refers to it but file no longer exists. If deleted on purpose, try uninstalling the software. If you still want it, try reinstalling it’. The file being referred to in the error message is ‘Hpsjvxd.vxd’. Having followed the error messages instructions a hundred different times I still get the message. I have been able to install the scanner but there is an error message regarding its drivers not being correctly installed. I have downloaded the latest drivers from the internet but when attempting to install them nothing appears to happen (no error message though). In short, I cannot use the scanner. Any ideas? (more…)

Please check your Content Advisor settings for missing information
By skid on January 22, 2001 in Internet and email | No Comments
I am running Windows 98 and Internet Explorer 5. Whenever I start Internet Explorer and try to visit a website the message ‘Please check your Content Advisor settings for missing information’ appears and I cannot visit any websites. As far as I know, I have not enabled Content Advisor, yet whenever I try to disable it when I restart Internet Explorer the Content Advisor is always enabled again and I am back to square one. Any suggestions would be appreciated. (more…)

Background images in emails
By skid on January 22, 2001 in Internet and email | No Comments
My problem is that I can’t get a chosen background image to transmit with e-mail messages. I go through the ‘Format’ menu > ‘Background’ > ‘Picture’ to select a background but it doesn’t send. I have also tried ‘Format’ menu > ‘Apply Stationery’ but the same negative result applies. Looks great on my screen. Hope you can help. (more…)

Word Web toolbar
By skid on January 15, 2001 in Office | No Comments
I use Word 2000 on quite a few documents with tables of contents. I normally only have the Standard and Formatting toolbars active. However if I click the cursor on a page in the table of contents to go to that page, Word 2000 automatically starts the Web toolbar. I don’t use that toolbar, and don’t want to lose that portion of my screen that it uses. Is there a way to prevent the Web toolbar opening every time I click on a page in the table of contents? CD-ROM drivers for boot disk
By skid on January 15, 2001 in CD/DVD | No Comments
I don’t know all that much about computers but over the years I’ve managed to pick up a few things. I’m now attempting to ‘do up’ an old 486 DX2. I’ve formatted the hard drive and made a boot disk with the drivers for the CD-ROM. When I start the PC it tells me that it has detected the CD-ROM. So far so good. Where my problem lies is I can’t switch to the CD-ROM to load Windows 95 from a CD. I’ve tried everything I can think of and anything anyone else has suggested but I just can’t switch to the CD-ROM. Where am I going wrong? (more…)
