Cannot complete ScanDisk or Disk Defragmenter

I have the McAfee Virus Scan v.4.5 installed on my computer (Pentium 133, Windows 95). I am unable to complete a ScanDisk and/or Disk Defragment when McAfee is on. However, when I temporarily disable the virus scanner both these tasks work. Would you please explain to me why this occurs and how to solve the problem?
When running ScanDisk or Disk Defragmenter you should always close any applications running in the background. This is because if there is any disk activity while either of these two utilities are running, they will restart themselves. As virus scanners such as McAfee are constantly running things such as background scans, they need to be temporarily disabled, so that they cease all disk activity which allows ScanDisk or Disk Defragmenter to run properly. This isn’t so much a problem, but just something that has to be done. So you will have to keep on disabling McAfee Virus Scan whenever you wish to use ScanDisk or Disk Defragmenter.
