DOS memory and run time error

  • I am trying to play old computer games like Wolfenstein 3D and Blake Stone but when I run the programs an error message appears saying that I have a memory problem or that there is a run time error. I have a Celeron 500mhz running Windows 98 and a lot of memory. Can you help me?

This problem can occur when trying to run DOS games under Windows 98 or through the MS-DOS prompt in Windows. I have also experienced this problem and have found that the way to get around it, is to boot directly into DOS rather than Windows. You can do this by pressing the ‘F8′ key when the ‘Starting Windows 98…’ message appears during boot (just before the Windows splash screen) and on the menu which appears, select and enter ‘Command Prompt Only’. This will boot the computer directly to the DOS command prompt from where you can run DOS applications or games (hopefully) without any problems. However, be careful as some applications may pipe out some loud music or sound as DOS doesn’t have a volume control like Windows. I suggest disconnecting your speakers (so that you don’t blow them out) until you are comfortable with the volume of the sound.

Hi there. If this is the first time you are posting a comment it will not appear immediately, but needs to be approved. This is necessary in order to combat comment spam. However, once you have submitted a comment (which is subsequently approved) you do not need to go through this process again - the site remembers who you are and auto-approves your comments. Nifty eh? Anyway, sorry about the inconvenience that this may cause for your first comment post.
